Most people remember their kindergarten teachers. It’s a milestone year in a child’s life where students learn what it’s like to be in “big school.” For Debbie Arrighi, she enjoys being able to help start their educational journeys.
“This is my 15th teaching kindergarten. I taught kindergarten, my entire career, expect for one year and I quickly asked to go back to kindergarten,” she laughed. “There’s just something about being there for the first year and being their first teacher.”
Kindergarten curriculum focuses on academics and social skills. Children learn how to share, how to walk in a line, how to play well with others, and more.
“They come in as babies in August, and at all different stages,” she said. “My job is to make sure that by the end of the year that they are ready for 1st grade.”
She also enjoys teaching kindergarten, specifically at Pike Road Elementary School. Her father was in the military and retired in this area. She went to high school and college here and is proud to call the River Region home.
“Living in Pike Road and working in Pike Road is special. I also run into old students and current students, and I really get to build those relationships,” she said.
Those bonds and structures are what help her build the foundation in her classroom at Pike Road Elementary. It’s why she fell in love with kindergarten, 15 years ago, and why she continues to teach the “tiniest students.”
“I can be firm, but kind. So there’s structure in our classroom and they know what they can do and what they cannot do,” she said. “But they also have fun and they’re able to make friends and just enjoy being with each other.”
