The Pike Road Lions Club has announced the establishment of its first high school Leo scholarship in honor of Charlene Rabren, former Town Clerk and a charter member of the Pike Road Lions. The scholarship recognizes Rabren’s decades of service and deep-rooted commitment to the Pike Road community.
A fourth-generation Pike Road resident, Mrs. Rabren attended Historic Pike Road High School, where her ninth-grade class was the final class to graduate in May 1970. Her involvement in community life began early—she first attended Pike Road Civic Club meetings as a baby with her mother—and continued throughout her youth, including service at the Pike Road Arts and Craft Fair.
Mrs. Rabren became active with the Pike Road Civic Club in 1995, serving on numerous committees and in multiple offices, including President. An avid quilter, she coordinates the Pike Road Quilters, a group under the Pike Road Arts Council, and has led the group’s weekly gatherings every Tuesday since 2019.
Instrumental in the incorporation of the Town of Pike Road, Mrs. Rabren and her husband, Wayne—who was elected the town’s first mayor—offered their dining room as the first town office. She was appointed Town Clerk in early 1998, serving as a volunteer for five years, and continued in the role until her retirement in late 2015. In retirement, she and her husband have enjoyed travels to Thailand, Israel, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and frequent trips to Auburn and Birmingham for their grandchildren’s sporting events.
In 2015, Mrs. Rabren was named Alabama Mother of the Year and represented the state at the American Mothers, Inc. annual convention in Washington, D.C. She was a longtime member of Pike Road Baptist Church and now serves at Brewer Memorial Church in Cecil. She and Wayne have two children, seven grandchildren, and are expecting their first great-grandchild in June.
