Pike Road Elementary School (PRES) has announced its first-ever Parent Ed Camp, a spring event designed to support families as they learn, grow, and partner with the school in their children’s educational journeys. The event will be held Saturday, March 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the PRES campus.
Built around topics parents say matter most, Parent Ed Camp will feature professional learning sessions informed by school data and family feedback. Attendees will have opportunities to ask questions, gain practical strategies, and connect with other parents and educators.
“My vision of Parent Ed Camp came about from noticing a trend in the feedback that we received from parents which is how we produced the sessions that will be offered at this event. I believe that in Pike Road we have an amazing community of parents who want to learn more about how to best help their children at home and want their children to be successful academically and socially. With that understanding, I wanted to create an opportunity for them to come and learn, grow, and gain helpful information and tools that they can use at home,” said Cyndal Whiten, principal at Pike Road Elementary.
To ensure parents can participate fully, PRES is partnering with high school Education in Training students and faculty to provide complimentary on-site childcare. Children ages 4–9 will enjoy a safe, supervised experience with snacks and engaging activities, including bouncy houses, face painting, and arts and crafts.
“The childcare vision came from understanding that sometimes it’s hard for parents to attend school events with their children because, as any good parent, their focus would be on making sure their child is entertained, which reduces their ability to really be attentive to the event. Allowing them to drop their children off with trusted individuals who will ensure their children are safe gives parents the opportunity to learn without worry,” Whiten said.
The campus will also host food trucks, parent resources, and a variety of educational and community resource tables to explore.
“Having the food trucks, parent resources, and activities is just an added plus to make this event even more memorable and special. My hope is to have this annually, with session topics changing based on data collected from parents and identified needs,” Whiten added.
Organizers are asking families who need childcare to complete the RSVP form so staff can prepare adequate snacks, supplies, and supervision. The form accommodates up to four children per family; families with more than four children can email cyndal.whiten@pikeroadschools.org to be added. The childcare RSVP deadline is Friday, February 27th, at 1:30 p.m.
