The Kiwanis Club of Pike Road is selling historic Christmas ornaments featuring Pinkston’s Grocery to raise money for college scholarships for Pike Road students.
The annual series began in 2020 and showcases drawings by local artist Bruce Brannen. “Each year, we choose historical places that represent the true community sense of Pike Road,” club President Steve Straughn said.
This year’s ornament features Brannen’s drawing of Pinkston’s Grocery, a beloved country store and gas station that once stood where the CVS now sits at 9505 Vaughn Road. Barnett Pinkston ran the store from 1945 until his death in 1990. Family members recall it as a community gathering spot where neighbors swapped gossip and purchases were recorded on index cards until customers were ready to settle up.
Straughn said the ornaments are $15, and all proceeds support the club’s scholarship program for Pike Road seniors. Over the past four years, the club has awarded $27,500 in scholarships to local students.
Ornaments are available from Kiwanis Club members or by calling 334-303-1579. A limited number of historic ornaments from previous years are also available for $10 each, featuring the John Hall Store, the Marks House, Kirksey Grocery and Grace Episcopal Church.
“This fundraiser is just one of the ways we, as Kiwanians, help to contribute to the development of our beautiful community,” Straughn said. The club’s Family Fun Run each spring also raises money for the scholarship program.
