A rare traffic encounter kicked off Memorial Day for one driver in Montgomery County.
According to the Waugh/Mt. Meigs Volunteer Fire Department, responders were called to the intersection at Wares Ferry Road and Edna Brake Lucas Drive in Montgomery around 3:20 a.m. where a driver had reportedly struck an alligator.
The driver was traveling toward Interstate 85 and hit the alligator as it was crossing the road.
While the driver only received minor injuries, their vehicle was totaled and had to be towed, according to officials. The alligator died at the scene.
One firefighter involved expressed how unusual an occurrence like this is.
“I have never seen this, and can say the same for those that responded,” he said. “We frequently see deer versus cars, and I have even seen cows that get out and cause accidents, but definitely never a car that ran into an alligator.”
