Now, Fuhrman has taken her passion one step further by joining forces with her long-time colleague and friend, Kayla Franklin, to launch a part-time side business offering art classes for both children and adults: Pike Road Art & Soul.
A Passion for Teaching and Art
Beth Fuhrman’s journey into art education began with a simple love for creating. As a child, she was captivated by the ability of art to tell stories, express emotions, and ignite the imagination. This passion led her to pursue a career in teaching, where she could share her love for the arts with others, especially children. Since the early days of the 10 year old school district, Fuhrman has taught art at Pike Road Elementary, where she has had the privilege of helping young students discover their own creativity, build confidence, and explore different artistic techniques. Her teaching style encourages students to experiment, express themselves freely, and embrace the process of creation without fear of judgment.
“My goal is to help kids find joy in creating, whether it’s through painting, drawing, or sculpting. I want them to understand that art isn’t just about the finished product; it’s about the journey, the learning, and the experience,” says Fuhrman.
The Collaboration with Kayla Franklin
Fuhrman’s passion for art and teaching has found a perfect partner in Kayla Franklin, a Makerspace teacher at Pike Road Elementary. Franklin’s role at the school involves providing students with hands-on experiences in technology, engineering, and design, and her background in innovation and creativity makes her a natural collaborator for Fuhrman’s art endeavors.
Kayla’s love for making began as a young child and her journey to becoming a teacher began with her deep love for helping others and her passion for creativity. She started her career in the classroom at Pike Road Schools, where she quickly discovered her enthusiasm for hands-on learning and empowering students to explore their own creativity. Over time, Kayla realized her true calling was to nurture students’ innovative spirit, so she transitioned in the role of teaching makerspace. Now, she brings the same enthusiasm to the classroom encouraging students to explore, design, and build using a variety of materials and technologies. Her innovative approach fosters problem-solving skills and teamwork, inspiring young minds to think critically and unleash their creativity in every project they undertake. Kayla’s dedication to cultivating a collaborative and inventive environment makes Makerspace an exciting and dynamic experience for all her students. Together, the two have built a lasting professional relationship over the years, working side by side in the classroom and sharing a similar teaching philosophy centered on creativity and exploration.
“We’ve been colleagues for a long time, and we’ve always shared a passion for fostering creativity in kids. Kayla has such an innovative approach to teaching, and I think our skills complement each other perfectly,” says Fuhrman.
Introducing Pike Road Art & Soul
With years of teaching experience under their belts and a shared passion for creativity, Fuhrman and Franklin decided to take their partnership beyond the classroom. The duo recently launched Pike Road Art & Soul, a part-time side business offering art classes to both children and adults. The mission of Pike Road Art & Soul is to provide a welcoming, inspiring space where people of all ages can explore their creative side, learn new skills, and express themselves through art. Whether it’s painting, drawing, pottery, or mixed media, the classes cater to a wide range of artistic interests and abilities.
“We wanted to create a space where people could connect with their inner artist and have fun doing it,” says Franklin. “Art is such a powerful form of self-expression, and we want to make it accessible to everyone, no matter their experience level.”
The partnership between Fuhrman and Franklin brings together Fuhrman’s expertise in traditional art techniques and Franklin’s innovative approach to creativity, blending the best of both worlds.
