Pike Road Schools to Host MIC3 Training June 4 to Support Military-Connected Students
Pike Road Schools will host the first of two training sessions for the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) on Thursday, June 4, at 1:00 pm in the PRS Central Office Training Facility. The session is designed to help participants better understand how the Compact supports military-connected students as they move between schools and states.
The training will provide an overview of MIC3 requirements, policies, and procedures in key areas that affect highly mobile military families, including:
- Enrollment
- Records transfer
- Placement
- Attendance
- Eligibility
- Graduation requirements
At the heart of the session is the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children (ICEOMC), also called “the Compact.” The Compact’s purpose is to remove barriers to educational success imposed on children of military families due to frequent moves and a service member’s deployments. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have enacted legislation to participate, creating a consistent, collaborative framework that eases school transitions for military kids across the country.
In 2017, the Department of War (DoW) joined the Compact by signing a memorandum of understanding and adopting the DoW Instruction 1342.29. As a result, military children are covered by Compact regulations when transitioning between public schools and Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA) schools.
The session will include a brief history of how the Compact began and a practical overview of the education protections it affords to military-connected children. Attendees will receive a workbook and resource materials to assist them as they transition with their family.
This event marks the first of two MIC3 trainings hosted by Pike Road Schools; details about the second session will be shared soon. For more information about the Compact, visit mic3.net.
