The Kiwanis Club of Pike Road lived up to its mission of helping area youth by awarding $8,000 in college scholarships to four high school seniors.
Club President Steve Straughn announced the recipients May 11 at the Pike Road Town Council meeting at Town Hall. Each student received a $2,000 scholarship:
- Olivia Robinson, a Macon East Academy senior headed to Troy University to study nursing
- Emma Grace Spivey, a Pike Road High School senior going to Auburn University to major in music education
- Jackson Amburn, a Pike Road High School senior attending Troy University for broadcast journalism
- Jordan Tetter, an Alabama Christian Academy senior going to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to study mechanical engineering
“This support will help me in obtaining my college education and allow me to stay focused on my academic goals. I appreciate the club’s commitment to supporting students in the community and investing in our future,” Tetter said.
Straughn said the Kiwanis Club of Pike Road looks at much more than grades when awarding scholarships. “We purposely seek out deserving students who are often overlooked by other avenues of financial aid. We feel that by awarding scholarships to these types of candidates in the Pike Road area, it makes a significant impact on those select students and their families,” he said.
The $8,000 in scholarships brings the total scholarships given by the club in the last five years to $35,000. The club raises scholarship funds with its 5K Family Fun Run in the spring and by selling historic Pike Road Christmas ornaments in the fall, Straughn said.
Organized in the fall of 2019 with a primary focus on supporting youth in the community, the Kiwanis Club of Pike Road presented its first scholarships in 2022. The club’s next project will be directing parking at Pike Road’s Summerfest celebration on June 25, Straughn said.
