In the spirit of the season, three teenage boys from Pike Road sprang into action after learning that Juan, an employee at NYC Gyro in The Waters, would be unable to see his daughter in New York for Christmas.
Wiley McClendon, Kirk Harbin, and Benton Dunn spent several days earlier this month going door-to-door and taking on odd jobs for residents in The Waters—yard work, dog walking, and even washing golf carts—to collect donations.
These three young men learned that Juan would not be able to see his daughter for the holidays, and worked quietly and without their parents’ knowledge, the teens raised more than $1,200 in just a few days.
“When the parents found out, we were amazed at how much the boys had raised,” said Laura McClendon.
Kristin Dunn expressed the families’ gratitude to neighbors who pitched in. “We want to thank each and every person who donated. We were so appreciative of the kindness and generosity,” she said.
The act of kindness served as a reminder, the families noted, that the Christmas season offers a special opportunity to be a blessing to community members who may be separated from loved ones or facing a lean holiday.
