President Trump has hinted in recent days that the U.S. may buy beef from Argentina in an effort to bring down beef prices.
It is a comment that is leading some cattle farmers, including in the River Region, to buy locally sourced products.
Matthew Pounds and his wife co-own Pounds Meat Wagon. The Mathews, Alabama-based farm raises and produces beef and beef tallow products for customers around Montgomery and the surrounding cities.
Pounds said he wants Alabamians to shop local, rather than seeing a shift to bringing in beef from other countries, such as Argentina.
“My immediate reaction was ‘we need to be America first’ and sustained producers and the American people need to buy from the local producers before we go spend money outside of the country,” he said.
While Pounds said beef prices at the grocery stores are on the rise, he said importing beef, rather than buying local, could lead the average cattle farmer to sell cattle if they lose business.
“You know, that’s not a huge hit, but it’s a slippery slope and a precedent that we would be better off to just buy local for our producers here,” he said.
Pounds said he wants lawmakers to consider the long-term drawbacks of bringing in cattle products instead of growing the domestic market.
