More than 200 student athletes filled the pews of Woodland Methodist Church Thursday night — not for a game, but for a message of resilience, faith, and perseverance.
Former University of Alabama running back and NFL player Siran Stacy took the stage to share his testimony, opening up about the challenges he faced as a teenager and the struggles that shaped his life.
“I was a teenager, I know some of the ups and downs. I know some of the pitfalls as a young man that caught up with me later on in my life,” Stacy said. “I’ve been able to share some of the things that affected me.”
Church leaders say the goal of the program — called a Celebration of Youth — was to encourage athletes to focus on more than just sports.
“I believe what he has to offer could be the doorway for a lot of these young athletes,” said Rev. John Blount of Woodland Methodist. “The church is a place of sanctification, a place to grow and love.”
For the students, Stacy’s words carried weight.
Organizers say the lessons shared tonight will carry beyond the sanctuary — into classrooms, locker rooms, and everyday life. They also hope to host more events like this in the future to continue uplifting youth across the River Region.
