Governor Kay Ivey and Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries (ADAI) Commissioner Rick Pate officially proclaimed October 12 as Farmers’ Day in Alabama during a ceremony at Pike Road’s own Sweet Creek Farm Market, highlighting the essential role farmers play in sustaining families and contributing $77.3 billion annually to the state’s economy.
Sweet Creek owner and Alabama Representative Reed Ingram and Blue Ribbon Dairy owner Michaela Sanders-Wilson joined the event, underscoring the daily sacrifices farmers make to feed and clothe communities across the state. Local farmers, elected officials, and community members gathered to celebrate and show support for Alabama’s agricultural families.
“Alabama farmers are the backbone of our communities. They work tirelessly to put food on our tables, clothes on our backs and keep our rural economies strong,” said Commissioner Rick Pate. “Farmers’ Day and our Thank A Farmer initiative are about more than just recognition; they are about instilling a deeper appreciation for the farmers and ranchers whose hard work sustains us all.”
Governor Ivey’s proclamation called on all Alabamians to pause and recognize the sacrifices, dedication, and resilience of the state’s farming families. The announcement also spotlighted ADAI’s Thank A Farmer initiative, launched in January 2025, which emphasizes the daily impact of farming and the burdens producers shoulder—through severe weather, disease outbreaks, long hours, and often thin returns—to feed the nation. ADAI says those efforts too often go unrecognized and undercompensated, and the department is committed to advocating on farmers’ behalf.
Alabama ranks among the top producers of freshwater fish, poultry, peanuts, and pecans, and places in the top ten nationally for cotton production.
