September is Suicide Prevention Month—a time to raise awareness, share life-saving resources, and remind one another that help and hope are always available. In Pike Road and across the River Region, each of us can play a role in recognizing the signs of struggle, reaching out, and connecting people to care.

Reaching out for help and support is a sign of strength. Recovery is possible, and you are not alone. Whether you’re worried about yourself or someone you love in Pike Road, help is available today.
If you need support right now, call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org.
Why this matters:
- Suicide affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and neighborhoods.
- Most people who experience suicidal thoughts find relief with support, treatment, and time.
- Talking about mental health and asking directly about suicide can save lives.
Know the warning signs (If you notice one or more of the following, take it seriously and reach out):
- Talking about wanting to die, feeling like a burden, or having no reason to live
- Increased withdrawal, hopelessness, or dramatic mood changes
- Risky behavior, agitation, or severe anxiety
- Changes in sleep or appetite
- Giving away possessions or saying goodbye
- Seeking access to means (e.g., firearms, medications)
How to help someone you’re worried about:
- Ask directly and calmly: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Asking does not plant the idea; it opens the door to help.
- Listen without judgment: Validate feelings. Avoid minimizing pain or giving quick fixes.
- Keep them safe: If there’s immediate danger, call 911. If possible, reduce access to lethal means (secure firearms and lock medications).
- Connect to help: Call or text 988 with them, or help schedule an urgent appointment with a clinician. Don’t leave them alone if they’re in immediate danger.
- Follow up: Check in regularly. Simple texts and calls help people feel less alone.
