Sept. 9 was a special day in Kyndel Ray’s classroom—her birthday. The Pike Road Elementary teacher chose to celebrate in her favorite place, surrounded by her 3rd grade students.
“I’ve always wanted to teach. I never knew I wanted to teach 3rd grade, but I love it so much,” Ray said.
The Reeltown native grew up dreaming of being an educator. After graduating from Reeltown High School and Troy University, she landed her first teaching job just four years ago. Now, she teaches math, science, and social studies and has already been recognized for making math easier to grasp for her students.
“We use a lot of hands-on manipulatives, things like tiles and other objects to make groups, so they really love that,” Ray explained.
She says she enjoys teaching 3rd grade because of the challenges and milestones the year brings.
“I understand that 3rd grade is a transitional year and that’s what I enjoy. They start learning multiplication, fractions, all those things. My partner teachers are focused on reading comprehension with the Literacy Act, so it’s a lot going on. I know it can be a big transition, but it’s also so fun.”
Ray is also navigating a new transition at home—being a mom. She and her husband recently welcomed a baby boy, Hudson, who just turned four months old.
“I love him so much. We’re constantly taking so many pictures of him. I just took a picture with him this morning for my birthday. I’ve been watching him grow over these past couple of months at home, and at school, I watch my students grow and learn.”
