Since ground broke on the site of the new Pike Road High School 15 months ago a lot of work has been done, but the project is still behind schedule.
Mayor Gordon Stone and Superintendent Dr. Keith Lankford hosted a press conference detailing the latest developments on what to expect.
Originally set to open in August 2026, Pike Road High School students will have to wait until at least December to start classes on their new campus.
The good news is the new school will include 10 more classrooms than previously thought. Six will be for advanced curriculum, and the other 4 for special needs students.
It brings the total number of expected classrooms to 65.
“When we did the bid process we had some additional funds, and so with those additional funds we were able to do 6 classrooms on one side, 4 classrooms on the other,” explained superintendent Dr. Keith Lankford.
The high school isn’t the only focus for the school system. At the elementary school, they’re converting 2 large collaborative classrooms into 4 smaller classrooms.
They’re also looking to start soon on a new access road.
“If you’ve been in the car line at the elementary school in Pike Road, you know it’s very, very long,” Lankford said. “We’re hoping to shrink that up and get a new access road besides coming through the Orchards subdivision.”
The intermediate school will also soon be getting enhancements. Plans are to soon add four to six classrooms, a new gym, and traffic improvements. In future phases of that project, the plan is a new lunchroom, even more classrooms, and a stage area.
