Pike Road is one of Alabama’s fastest growing towns, and two men are facing off to lead it for the next 4 years.
Gordon Stone, the town’s current mayor, is running against builder Mark Spurlin, who has lived in Pike Road for seven years.
Stone served on the Pike Road Council in 2000 before being elected mayor in 2004.
He says his goal is to maintain the town’s character while planning for progress.
“I think another one is to recognize that we have great fundamentals. Our services are superb, they’re outstanding, and they’re efficient,” he says. “They don’t cost us extra money. Our relationship with our fire departments, our police departments, our new ambulance service, outstanding.”
Mark Spurlin, Stone’s opponent, worries that the town is growing too fast and says he wants to give residents a voice as the town moves forward.
“We need to make sure our growth patterns can be trusted by the public that they are comfortable with what’s happening and what’s coming in and how fast. We’re growing. It needs to reconcile with safety services. It needs to reconcile with the schools,” he said.
Pike Road’s municipal election will be held on Tuesday Aug. 26.
