Doug Fuhrman, current member of the Pike Road Town Council representing Place 5, is seeking reelection. A longtime resident and advocate for the town’s growth, Fuhrman brings a deeply personal connection to his campaign centered on education, community services, smart growth, and quality of life.
Fuhrman’s initial motivation to join the Town Council was driven by his role as a parent within the Pike Road School System. Both of his sons have attended Pike Road schools, with one graduated and the other a rising senior. “My main motivation was just to try to advocate for our school system in a proactive way and just be serving whatever capacity I could to ensure that the town threw its full weight and support behind the school in whatever capacity they need it,” he said.
He emphasizes that a heart for service and a desire to advocate for the community, regardless of differing opinions or perspectives, is what qualifies one to serve.
Fuhrman highlights four main pillars for his campaign:
- Education: Maintainin strong support for Pike Road Schools remains a top priority. While the school system scores well statewide, Fuhrman warns against complacency, stressing that continued investment is critical to sustaining community success.
- Resident Services: Fuhrman is committed to ensuring the availability and quality of essential services, from everyday needs like trash pickup to critical safety services including fire, medical, and law enforcement. He strives to keep these services aligned with the town’s growth.
- Smart Growth and Planning: Recognizing the inevitability of growth, Fuhrman advocates for thoughtful planning focused on preserving rural areas while concentrating business development along major arteries such as Highway 110 and Highway 231. He supports the town’s upcoming comprehensive plan as a roadmap to guide sustainable development.
- Quality of Life: Fuhrman seeks to enhance residents’ daily lives by attracting businesses that meet everyday needs, while also exploring future community assets such as senior services and community centers for youth and families.
Having served on the council for one term, Fuhrman prioritizes building genuine relationships with the mayor, fellow council members, town staff, and residents to foster trust and collaboration. He actively seeks feedback through personal interactions, public meetings, and open communication channels including email.
Fuhrman shared, “If you start to learn what makes somebody tick and what motivates them as an individual, then it starts to make a little bit more sense, around the decisions that they make based on what motivates them.”
He stresses the importance of honesty and transparency in government. “If someone asks a question, I give a straightforward yes or no and, if desired, follow up with my reasons,” Fuhrman explained. He also supports leveraging modern communication tools to keep citizens well-informed about town affairs and decisions.
Fuhrman champions the character that small, locally based businesses bring to Pike Road and acknowledges that the town is still growing its economic support systems for these businesses. He believes continued efforts are needed to discover the best ways to assist different business types effectively. He said, “We need to have an open line of communication so that our small business community that is here can communicate back to us and say hey, can I get your help in this capacity or another.” He used an analogy with the school system, noting that sometimes the town doesn’t know what’s needed unless the businesses communicate it.
“We’re in the process and about to wrap up in the next couple of months, a new comprehensive plan for our community,” he said. “It’s a 30,000 foot road map of how does all this stuff fits together and make sense.” He explained that planning officials and staff have diligently worked on this plan to determine which aspects of the town should remain rural and where business communities should congregate, such as along major thoroughfares, which have the most capacity for traffic.
On public safety, Fuhrman notes recent progress in improving ambulance services so Pike Road can offer its own local emergency medical response, complementing strong law enforcement and fire services. He advocates sustaining and strengthening these services as the town grows.
Fuhrman and his wife Beth, an art teacher at Pike Road Elementary School, have lived in Pike Road since 2007, drawn by the country environment and the promise of a growing school system. He shared, “We moved here in 2007, one, because we wanted to live in sort of a country environment, so we moved to Pike Road on a kind of a larger lot in a neighborhood. And then on the hopes of a school system coming. We moved in 2007, and eight years later, Pike Road Schools opened up in 2015. We were there before it opened, and we were there on the day it opened, and we have been there ever since.”
With a construction business founded in 2013 based in Pike Road, Fuhrman blends business experience with his dedication to public service. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and looks forward to continuing if reelected.
