A group of Alabama students are among the 2,900 nationwide honored with college-sponsored Merit Scholarships.
The scholarships are financed by 74 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the District of Columbia, according to a recent release.
Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship, the release says.
An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2025 competition to more than 3,600.
The number of winners in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
The honorees were selected from more than 15,000 finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Each of the finalists were judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for college success, representing less than one percent of the nation’s seniors, according to the release.
