Mark Spurlin, a longtime resident of Pike Road, AL, has recently announced his candidacy for the position of Mayor in the upcoming election. In an exclusive interview, Spurlin shared his inspirations, aspirations, and family background, shedding light on what motivates his decision to run for office.
Spurlin explained that his background in urban planning, coupled with his extensive exposure to the design and construction industry, has fueled his desire to actively shape the future path of Pike Road.
“I’ve always loved design and building. I’ve got an engineer brother, an architect brother, and they kind of led me into the industry, pointed me towards the landscape architecture industry, which pointed me a lot into a lot of the urban planning world,” said Spurlin.
Spurlin shared, “I have a background in urban planning and a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University.”
His passion for urban planning has driven him to know that he can contribute to the town’s growth and development in a meaningful way.
Spurlin shared, “I do believe in this particular season of Pike Road that I can be a tool because I have been exposed to a lot of the concepts and a lot of the science behind some of the urban planning methods.”
Having extensively traveled throughout the eastern United States and witnessed various urban developments, Spurlin recognized the unique potential of Pike Road.
“One of the things that attracted us to Pike Road originally was it’s a blank slate, it’s agricultural land, it’s an oasis, said Spurlin. “As we’ve grown, which I am proud of our growth, I’ve not been pleased with how it has shaped. It’s not what I understood would be our path forward.”
Central to Spurlin’s motivation is the well-being and education of the town’s children, including his three daughters. He emphasized the importance of maintaining intentional growth in Pike Road to support a vibrant community that nurtures the next generation.
“I think growth ties into the future of the school and how we strengthen it,” said Spurlin. “We must maintain intentional growth to be a premier community, and a real test is how much we strengthen the school and school system.”
As a resident of The Waters since 2018, Spurlin’s commitment to the town’s future stems from both personal and professional aspirations to create a dynamic, thriving environment for his family and fellow community members.
Delving into his personal life, Spurlin touched upon the rich artistic and creative inclinations of his family, highlighting their love for design, construction, and the arts.
He shared, “One of the things we like doing is buying houses, fixing them up, and eventually selling and doing another project. It’s a way for my wife and me to exert our creative juices in the way we want.”
He also shared about his daughters’ passion for art, dance, and equestrian activities, underscoring their active engagement in various artistic pursuits within the community.
“I am 39 years old,” said Spurlin. “I have been married to Jessica for 10 years this July. and we have three daughters, Lottie, who is eight. Lucy, who is five, and Millie, who will turn two this summer.”
Spurlin expressed his and his family’s affinity for home improvement projects, travel, and culinary explorations. His deep-rooted connections to the local Montgomery area and involvement in regional communities further underscore his commitment to enacting positive change in Pike Road.
Through his comprehensive understanding of the town’s needs, Spurlin aims to leverage his expertise in urban planning, passion for community engagement, and dedication to fostering a vibrant, inclusive environment for all residents.
