There’s a lot at “steak” for a cooking competition on Saturday, March 22 — and you could find yourself grilling among the greats.
BBQ Hill, 11775 Troy Highway, Pike Road, is hosting its second SLE Rodeo Steak Championship. This Steak Cookoff Association-sanctioned competition will feature some of the top grillers from across the US, plus a few international ones.
“We have some cooks coming from Australia and one from New Zealand,” said BBQ Hill owner Mike Smith.
Local cooks who would like to grill alongside them are welcome to register. Smith is expecting between 35 and 45 cooking teams, but there’s always room for more.
“You do not have to be a member of SCA to compete,” Smith said. “Anybody that wants to come cook a steak can cook a steak. Anybody. You literally can come off the road with a grill, hook up and cook.”
Of course, you have to register online at steakcookoffs.com, pay the entry fee, and follow the SCA rules. Smith said cooks should register by Thursday, March 20.
There are two steak divisions (A and B) — the entry fee is $160 for one of those, or $320 for both. The steaks are all boneless upper two-thirds choice ribeyes, and they’ll be provided for all registered steak cooks.
“When they trim them out, they will be round,” Smith said.
There are also three ancillary divisions, and the entry fee for each of them is $50:
- Anything with bacon
- Anything with peanuts
- Anything with sweet potatoes
“Eighty percent of the dish needs to be whatever the ‘anything’ is,” Smith said, adding that it literally can be anything — even a dessert.
“The star of their dish needs to be the bacon, peanuts or sweet potato,” Smith said.
The competition will be filmed to air on BAMA-Q TV.
Turn in times for cooks on March 22 will be:
- Noon to 12:15 p.m. — peanut
- 1-1:15 p.m. — bacon
- 2-2:15 p.m. — sweet potato
- 3-3:30 p.m. — Steak A
- 4:30-5 p.m. — Steak B
Awards will be presented at 6 p.m.
