Pike Road School’s wrestling program is celebrating a remarkable achievement this year as 8 student-athletes have qualified for the 2024 State Tournament. Coach Craig Duncan, the Head Wrestling Coach, recently shared insights into this year’s success and the dedication of the Pike Road student-athletes.
Coach Duncan praised the wrestling team’s numerous achievements this season, highlighting their impressive records and tournament wins in their respective weight classes. He stated, “We also won our first-ever traditional tournament at the Braves Invitational in Heard County, GA.”
Coach Duncan attributed the program’s success to the consistent coaching staff and the wrestlers’ commitment to improvement. He said, “Having the same coaching staff for several years has been a big contribution to the team’s success. Plus, the wrestlers understand what we want done, and they execute at a higher level.”
The increased number of student-athletes qualifying for the state tournament was attributed to the wrestlers’ continued growth and understanding of the coaching staff’s offerings. Duncan said, “Each year each of these wrestlers have improved in the sport. They have stuck with the program and they understand what this coaching staff has offered.” Coach Duncan added the team’s cohesion, “staying together, and growing in the
sport has been a reason for their success.”
Setting their sights on winning a State Championship, the wrestling team has set high expectations for themselves this year. Despite facing challenges such as the overlap with the football season, the team has demonstrated resilience and commitment to their sport.
Coach Duncan commended the dedication of the student-athletes. He said, “This is a tough sport for young men to stick with because most of the new wrestlers are not always successful.” He acknowledged the impact of individual skill development in the program’s success. He said, “The key to this team has been their ability to stick through the tough times, and now
they are seeing the fruits of their labor throughout the years.”
Looking ahead, the Pike Road School wrestling program plans to celebrate the achievements of the student-athletes with an end-of-year banquet, where each wrestler will be recognized for their contributions to the program.
As the Pike Road wrestling team continues to excel and grow, the entire school community eagerly anticipates the upcoming state tournament and celebrates the commitment and achievements of these exceptional student-athletes.
