The Pike Road Football Team, led by Head Coach Granger Shook, has had an exceptional season filled with grit, determination, and resilience.
Following the win over Hueytown in the AHSAA 6A quarterfinal game, Coach Shook shared his thoughts on how the team reached this point as they prepare for the semifinal game vs Saraland this coming Friday.
As he reflected on the team’s journey to the semifinals, it was evident that this team is not only defined by their wins on the field but also by the camaraderie and spirit they have built together. “I am blessed to be a part of one of the best programs in the state,” said Shook. “We have really good players and one of the best staffs in the state.”
After a hard-fought win over Hueytown, Coach Shook expressed his pride in the team’s ability to come together and secure the victory. “I am proud that our boys found a way to win,” said Shook.
During the game, the offense, defense, and special teams all played integral roles in securing the win. Shook said, “The offense scored and had a long drive when we needed it. The defense played lights out again. Our special teams came up clutch at the end of the game.”
This win showcased the coaches’ and players’ well-rounded and determined approach to the game. Despite facing challenges and self-inflicted mistakes, the Pike Road Football Team demonstrated their championship mentality when it mattered most.
Coach Shook acknowledges the pivotal role of the defense in the quarterfinal game. He said, “Our defense was huge. This unit helped us win the field position battle most of the night and all of the second half.” The Pike Road defense controlled the field position and made crucial stops, instrumental in securing the victory and advancing in the playoffs.
The team’s mindset going into the quarterfinal game “was one of confidence and determination,” said Coach Shook. “I believe our grit and resolve were crucial in the game.” Through it all, the team showed their ability to come together, overcome obstacles, and come through with a win.
Coach Shook admitted the team had some mistakes in the game against Hueytown. “They were a very good team,” he shared. “We lost the turnover battle and we had the ball inside the 20-yard line three times and came away with no points. We overcame self-inflicted issues and still beat a really good team.”
“Championship teams have those games where they do not play their best, but they still find a way to win. That is what this group did,” said Shook.
Shook continued, “Making it to the semifinals in 6A football is tough. It takes commitment from the entire program to make it to Thanksgiving week.” He praised the parents, administration, community, players, and staff for their support and importance in making it to this point.
“I am proud of this team,” said Shook. “Our team may look a little different schematically on Friday night now vs when we first kicked off in August. However, the leadership on this team has not wavered. Our team has grown closer together. These young men still enjoy being around one another.”
This Pike Road Football Team has faced some challenges throughout the season, such as a tough non-region schedule and key injuries. He praised his coaching staff, saying “We have an excellent staff. These men have poured countless hours into this team. Our families have sacrificed as well.” He continued to reiterate that “our staff has done a tremendous job being creative in various areas. This staff has kept the main thing the main thing, and we just keep coaching and loving these boys.”
Despite setbacks, the team displayed resilience and perseverance, rallying around each other and continuing to compete at a high level. “These boys are winners,” said Shook. “They have more resolve, determination, and grit than any group I have been around.”
This coming Friday, Pike Road will host the Saraland Spartans (12-0) at home in Pike Road Stadium. Coach Shook shared, “Pike Road Football is still a very young program in this state. Alabama has some of the best high school football in the entire country. For this program to have already won one state title, and for this to be our third semifinal appearance is remarkable.”
Hosting the semifinal game is a significant milestone for the program and the community. He said, “Hosting this semifinal matchup is huge. It is a testament to our current players, but it is also something for our former players to look at and take pride in an expectation they helped create.”
The team’s accomplishments also reflect the support they receive from parents, teachers, administration, and the community. The Pike Road community is one that shows up every Friday night to support and cheer on this group of young men. He emphasizes the values of teamwork, connection, and support that have been integral to the team’s success.
As the team prepares for the semifinal matchup, Coach Shook and the Pike Road Football Team are focused on continuing to play with passion, unity, and purpose. He shared “It’s not what we do, it’s how we do it.” He wants the Pike Road community to take pride in what they have accomplished but also how these young men have proven they deserve to be playing in this semifinal game.
He also shared his focus has been on “Connection over Perfection. Our record is not perfect. That was never the goal. But this is as close of a team as I have ever been around,” said Shook. “They have played with, and for one another. It has been fun to watch and be a part of.”
Coach Shook encouraged the parents, teachers, administration, and the community to show up on Friday, November 29th at 7 pm to show their support for this team that has embodied the values of community support, pride, and connection that define their journey to the semifinals. Let’s Go Patriots!
